Adaptation or Fan Fiction??

So it’s not news that I spend time cruising the internet for inspiration to jog my muse. It’s also not news that I started my writing journey on various fan fiction websites. With the condescendingly amused chuckles I get thrown my way, or in some cases outright derision when I mention fan fiction, I thought it would be amusing to remind people that their most recent obsession may in fact be the very thing they scoff at me for writing.

In addition to all the mentions in the attached blog post I would add:

True Blood – clearly fan fiction of the popular Sookie Stackhouse Mysteries by Charlaine Harris

Game of Thrones – A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin

My Fair Lady – based off of George Bernard Shaw‘s Pygmalian

Teen Wolf – originally a movie starring Michael J Fox, it is now a hit TV show.

Chronicles of RiddickAlan Dean Foster. What came first the book or the movie? He also had a heavy hand in Star Wars and Star Trek the Motion Picture

My point is, before you look down on someone for writing derivative fiction or fan fiction take a look around it’s more prevalent than you think. Take a read through another authors thoughts.
